LiDAR Forestry Mapping – 30 Hectares of Mixed Terrain
Project Overview
In Flight Robotics was commissioned to capture high-resolution elevation and vegetation data across approximately 30 hectares of mixed forest, open cut-block, and steep canyon terrain. Using our drone-mounted LiDAR, we achieved a full site scan in just 30 minutes—a process that would traditionally take multiple days on the ground.
Deliverables
- Classified & colorized point cloud (150–250 pts / m²)
- Segmented tree report for inventory and health
- Digital Elevation Model (DEM) – bare earth
- Digital Surface Model (DSM)
- Topographical contour maps and slope profiles
- CAD & GIS-ready outputs
Accuracy:
- X / Y ≥ 3 cm
- Z ≥ 10 cm
Why Drone LiDAR Makes Sense
• Speed & Safety: Traditional survey crews would require ≈ 2 days and exposure to steep terrain risks.
• Higher Resolution: Drone LiDAR delivers richer point density than helicopter LiDAR or ground surveying.
• Repeatable Data: The exact survey can be re-flown to track growth, erosion, or replanting over time.
Client Value
Forestry managers received a precision dataset ready for CAD and GIS, enabling accurate harvest planning, erosion monitoring, and compliance reporting.
