Kicking Horse Canyon Twinning Project - Aerial Documentation
Project Overview
As one of British Columbia’s most significant highway improvement initiatives, the Kicking Horse Canyon twinning project has transformed a challenging stretch of Highway 1 into a safer, modernized corridor. In Flight Robotics documented this transformation from the air over several years, capturing the progression from pre-construction conditions through to final completion.
Although not a commissioned assignment, this project was undertaken to preserve a visual record of the engineering achievement unfolding in our own backyard. The result is a detailed before-and-after comparison showcasing the scale, impact, and complexity of the upgrade.
Flight Details
-Multiple flights conducted over several years
-Consistent GPS-locked flight paths for accurate visual comparison
-Safe operation within Transport Canada regulations and canyon weather constraints
Deliverables
- Before/after aerial imagery of the full canyon corridor
- Progress footage documenting before and after conditions
- Visual reference package available for engineering teams, construction partners, community stakeholders
- Archival media showing long-term transformation
Impact
This long-term capture provides a unique visual record for:
-Project teams seeking external progress perspectives
-Agencies requiring documentation for public communication and historical archive
-Community members interested in the evolution of a major regional project
By combining local access with consistent, high quality aerial imaging, In Flight Robotics demonstrates the value drones bring to monitoring large-scale infrastructure across Western Canada
